What is el dia de los Reyes?

Known around Spain and Latin Ameria as “El Día de los Reyes” it is by far the most important date in Christmas Calendar. The three Kings are of course of biblical connotation; the kings who visited baby Jesus… also referred to as the ‘Three Wise Men’ or ‘the Magi’ in certain parts of Europe.

In Spain ‘Los Reyes Magos’ – Melchior, Caspar and Balthazar are what Santa Clause is to children all over the World. Kids write their letters in much the same way and if they have been good they will get what they want however if they have mi-behaved they will receive coal or ‘carbon’

Cabalgatas  – or Three Kings Parades are held all over Spain on the eve of the epiphany on the 5th January. The Sitges parade does not disappoint. Typically the parade takes about 45 minutes to pass with various parts of the community getting involved to emulate the camels, horses, and grandeur that the kings would have travelled in

Barcelona city attracts huge crowds. Children and adults alike line the streets to catch a glimpse of the kings and to hopefully pick up some sweets that get thrown to the crowds.

In Barcelona, the Three Kings usually arrive by boat to port Moll de la Fusta late afternoon and the parade weaves its way through the inner city finishing at Plaza Espana at the magic fountains.
