What Is a Masia?
If you are unfamiliar with the term, let us enlighten you. A Masia is a rural property, usually a farmhouse on a grand scale. You may have heard the term Hacienda before which denotes a similar type of property found in the Spanish colonies such as Mexico. But Masias are located mostly in the Eastern parts of Spain and Southern France. They form an inherent part of the Catalan landscape and identity. Joan Miró depicted his family’s farm in Montroig in one of his key works of art “The Farm”. When you choose to stay in a Masia, you will experience a unique part of Catalan culture.
Typically, there are three floors. The ground floor housed the animals, the first floor was for the family to reside, and the attic was for storage of dry crops. As you would expect, many are built from stone and have very thick walls, heavy wooden beams on the ceilings and huge fireplaces. These are buildings with bags of character and history that will enrich your stay in this region of Spain.
The Masia Today
While many Masias are still working farmhouses or vineyards, many have sadly been abandoned and fallen into disrepair. Fortunately, many have now diversified into other businesses and of course tourism is a prime use for these beautiful, historic buildings. Some have become hotels, but perhaps the majority are now glamorous holiday lets for larger groups. They allow for a relaxing break for those special celebrations.
Masia Weddings
For those looking for a dream wedding venue, some Masias even have their own chapel. Personally, we can’t think of a better way to tie the knot. For a smaller wedding all your guests can stay on one beautiful property! Or you can throw a huge wedding and just invite the key wedding party to spend the night! Check out the glorious Masia Victoria as a perfect example of one with its own chapel.
And of course you will be master (and mistress) of all you survey from your grand country property. You are almost guaranteed to have beautiful views of the rural Catalan landscape from your windows and terraces.
Which Masia?
They can vary from Uber luxurious to more rustic experiences. At the higher end you could choose the stunning Casa Felix which will take your breath away with its grandeur and stylish interiors. Or for really amazing value you could opt for Masia Cal Mingo. This is a 15th Century property with bags of rustic charm and spacious grounds, sleeping 22 guests from just 250 pppw! All of them will have been renovated sensitively as they are protected buildings, but don’t worry they still come with all mod cons. From enormous swimming pools to high tech interiors there is a property to cater for all needs.
Whichever property you choose, here at Utopia Villas we ensure that your Masia will be an experience to remember.
